It is generally agreed that Yangdi took the throne after assassinating his father and his elder brother. He built great canals but also spent lavish amounts on royal palaces and ornamentation. He strengthened China's northern border by rebuilding the Great Wall separating China from Inner Asia and extended the Chinese empire south to present-day Vietnam and north into Inner Asia.
