Cuauhtémoc was born circa 1495 and became emperor of the Aztecs in 1520. When Hernán Cortés marched on Tenochtitlán, Cuauhtémoc defended the city through a four-month siege. Captured by the Spanish, Cuauhtémoc was tortured to reveal the location of Aztec gold. His stoicism and refusal to speak became legendary. In 1522, Cortés took the emperor with him to Honduras and ordered him hanged on route. Cuauhtémoc died on February 26, 1525.
