Alexander I was born on December 16, 1888 in Cetinje, Montenegro. He was king of Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia kingdoms in addition to Yugoslavia. He struggled to create a united state out of his politically and ethnically divided collection of nations. In the process, he created a police state that required military support for survival. Alexander was assassinated by Croatian separatists in 1934.
